same과 the same의 차이를 어떻게 설명하면 좋을까요?

문장에 “The temperature in cave houses is always (same/the same), about 20℃.”가 나오고 정답은 the same이었어요.
the same이 익숙하긴 한데 왜 그런지 설명하기가 어렵네요.
the same temperature에서 temperature가 생략된 건가요, 아니면 same만의 다른 쓰임이 있는 건가요?
서술어로 쓸 때는 the same을 써야 하는지도 궁금해요.
