간접의문문에서 that 대신 if를 써야 하나요?

영어 문장 문법 질문드려요.
“After that game, I met my wife and son and asked that they knew who was shouting encouragement in the stand.”에서 밑줄 친 that이 틀렸다고 하는데 if를 써야 하나요?
that이 안 되는 이유를 잘 모르겠어요. 설명 부탁드려요~
