Setting and pursuing performance goals is something most workers are used to. However, if you ask what their learning goals are, they will usually stare at you blankly or give a performance goal in disguise. For example,“I want to learn how to earn more money” and “I would like to learn how to improve my golf skills” are just performance goals into which the word learning has been inserted. So what is the difference between a learning goal and a performance goal? Performance is an action that creates an observable change in the external world. Learning,on the otherhand,is a change which takes place within the learner, although it can be the result of interaction with the external world. Therefore, a change in understanding created by new information or a new interpretation of old information can be considered learning.
