in a better condition 을 가정으로 해석해야 하지 않을까요...여기서 physical condition 은 건강상태로 봐야 할 것 같습니다...\건강이 좋았더라면 영웅이 될 수 있었던 사람(큰 일을 할 수 있었던 사람도)도 건강에 신경을 못써서 그냥 스러져간 사람들이 많이 있었다\
